Understanding Your 5071C Letter: Identity Verification

Your Guide to State, Local, Federal, Estate + International Taxation

If you’ve received a 5071C letter, the IRS needs more information to verify your identity in order to process your tax return accurately. The IRS will continue processing your tax return once your identity is verified. Follow the identity verification steps below in order to provide the IRS with necessary information.

The steps are as follows:

  • Use the secure Identity Verification Service website idverify.irs.gov. To complete the entries you will need your name, date of birth, social security number and a copy of your most recently filed tax return.
  • If you cannot use the Idverify website, you can call the Identity Verification department telephone number provided in your letter.
  • If you did not file the return in question, you can use either option to notify the IRS.

The IRS is looking at ways to increase data security and protect taxpayers’ identities. To learn more on how to protect your identity, please click here.

      David –

Thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately, when it comes to things like your refund or amended tax return, you are at the mercy of the IRS. I would suggest contacting them again to see what the problem is and to ask them if there is more you can do to get your refund faster.

Thank you for your question and interest in our blog. It can take six to eight months to process, possibly longer if there’s been an identity theft.

I recieved a 5071c letter. I called the irs and went through the process of answering questions to verify my identity….the irs told me either i will recieve my refund or another letter asking more questions within 9 weeks. Is this normal???

      Jessica –

Thank you for your question and interest in our blog. The 5071c letter means that there is some sort of identity issue. That is why they ask the personal questions. The fact that you won’t hear from them again for a couple of months is normal. Unfortunately, the IRS is not able to do anything quickly. 2-3 months is normal.
