I have attended several governmental conferences over the past few years and looked around the room and wondered where is the generation that will assume the finance responsibilities in 10 to 20 years. Governmental finance is a specialty and is not covered in detail at colleges and universities. You should be thinking outside the box to find and develop individuals for our future.
The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) recognizes the need to get students involved in governmental organizations. The GFOA staff are reaching out to colleges and universities to learn how to increase interest in governmental finance as a profession. The GFOA also has a scholarship program in which Arizona students (one from the University of Phoenix and one from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University) have been awarded scholarships as incentives.
Some governments work with their local college or university to offer internships or other leadership type programs. What are you or your organization doing to develop individuals today into tomorrow’s leaders? We should all challenge our organizations to create programs or other initiatives that help today’s generation to become tomorrow’s leaders.
