Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce Sterling AwardsPosted on November 18 2010 by admin
For the second year in a row, I had the honor of judging the Non-profit category of the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce Sterling Awards. This year was even more special as it was the 25th year of the Sterling Awards, which honors our community’s best corporate neighbors and brightest rising stars. Henry & Horne is a previous Sterling Award winner, so I understand the rigorous judging process from both sides of the table! To even be a finalist is quite an honor, and this year’s Non-profit group included some amazing organizations.
Every Kid Counts – This organization works to allow youth to participate in programs giving them a great opportunity to learn, be involved and find solutions to the challenges they are facing in today’s society.
Gabriel’s Angels – Their mission is to deliver healing pet therapy to abused, neglected and at-risk children, nurturing their ability to love and trust, thereby freeing them from the cycle of violence.
St. Mary’s Food Bank– Founded in 1967, St. Mary’s Food Bank has been helping feed Arizona families for over 40 years. Today, the Food Bank is the second largest in the nation, providing food to 500 partner agencies in Arizona. As the world’s oldest food bank, they serve 13 of Arizona’s 15 counties more than 70 million meals per year. Additionally they offer programs to teach life skills and technical skills. For example, they offer a 16 week foodservice training program called Community Kitchen. Its purpose is to provide training and job placement in the food service industry to low income adults, while preparing meals to feed the hungry.
Congratulations to the 2010 Sterling Award Winner, St. Mary’s Food Bank, and also to the other finalists. It really was a privilege getting to learn more about some of the amazing local not-for-profit organizations here in Phoenix.
